This bewitching flower stopped us in our tracks on the trail near the Akaka Falls on the big island of Hawaii near Hilo.
Torch Ginger (latin name: Etlingera elatior) is also known by many other names. It can be found in many tropical countries, including Indonesia and Thailand, where the leaves, petals and seeds are prepared and eaten.

Akaka falls is a 422 feet tall waterfall located in the Akaka Falls State Park near Hilo on the island of Hawaii. It is possible to view this majestic waterfall from many portions of a trail that loops through the park.
The Flower of the Dragon Fruit Blooms Only at Night
The flower of the dragon fruit only blooms after dark. Although more commonly found in Southeast Asia, this photo was taken at the Banyan Tree Sanctuary in Kailua Kona on the island of Hawaii.
This plant (latin name pitya) has a flower that looks like an explosion of flame and produces a beautiful but short-lived fruit with the appearance of a brilliant red rosebud. Dragon fruit is purported to have many health benefits.
I can tell you that it tastes delicious!
Stunning Banyan Tree Sanctuary in Kailua Kona, Hawaii
The Banyan Tree Sanctuary Kailua Kona, Hawaii is known as a place of peace and a 100% vegan community designed for “like-minded seekers to rest, to remember, and to find clarity in manifesting their own personal dream.”
Although we are not vegan, we were welcomed to stay as long as we maintained a vegan lifestyle on the premises. We enjoyed four lovely days there spending our time on the beach, snorkeling and exploring the town of Kona.
This was a restive and relaxing stop on our way to our house sit in Western Australia.
